New York to Rockaway Beach Trip
Rockaway Beach is one of the most beautiful places you can go to in New York… God, so good, it’ll be always a mini vacay even if you go there only for 1 day for a few hours!!!
In this post I’ll try to give you as much info possible, hopefully, it’ll help you to enjoy your mini vacay.
It was last summer, 2017 summer, I signed up for a bike tour, from Manhattan New York to Rockaway Beach. I had no interest in a beach adventure, as of someone from the Mediterranean, where the sea is beautiful clean blue/green, I always thought New York beaches are dirty. So I only went to Miami every year for my beach hunger… And I signed up for the bike tour, because I love biking, so you can imagine my shock when we arrived at the beach.
First time at the Rockaway beach, I got hit by my heart, it was beautiful, sand, clean, good crowd. The water looked clean, refreshing, and wavey. I went a lot of time after that day, I even stayed for 2 nights, which was amazing!!!!!!!!! Okay let’s hold tight, I’ll go on details below how to make your Rockaway adventure better 🙂 You’re welcome darlings 🙂
1 – Take The Ferry
You must take the ferry. It’s $2.75 as a regular subway line, and it’s a beautiful ride. The Rockaway ferry routes and schedules are here at their official site. It takes off from Pier 11 at Wall Street area, plan to go there a few minutes before to walk in the labyrinth downtown. It may get a bit confusing.
In summer the ferry is always busy, I suggest go there for at least 15 minutes before during the week. If it’s weekend go there at least 30 minutes before. You’ll need to buy the tickets and get on the line, which is always long. And definitely stay in the upstairs section of the ferry if you want to feel the wind in your everywhere 😀 So cool!
They sell coffee, beer, etc on the ferry too 🙂 When you come to Rockaway there will be 2 free shuttle buses waiting for you. Take the one going to the boardwalk.
Try to not miss the last ferry which is around 8 pm, if you do there is a convenient subway line, but not that pleasant as the ferry. The last time we went we missed the ferry; the train was not working and so we got Uber for $14 for two people to Brooklyn, which is not bad at all.
2 – Rent Boogie Boards or Surf Boards
96th Street, the boardwalk has a store that rents the amazing boogie boards or surfboards. Both fun in my opinion. If you’re not familiar with the waves then you can start with boogie boards. (In Turkey we don’t have the body boards/boogie boards, so when my friend Simru saw it this year 2018 she was shocked and in love)
Boogie boards: $7/ hour or $25 till 5pm.
Surf boards: $35 till 5pm.
You can take surfing classes, I think starts from at least $50/hour. I still don’t know how to figure out if the waves are good for surfing before going there. Since I’m learning how to surf, I just go there, and if it looks okay, I rent the board and head to the surf beach, 92nd Street.
3 – Go To Rockaway Beach Surf Club
Whaat? You love tacos? Then you must go to this surf club, super cool vibe. Tacos are delicious yummii omg! and costs $3.5. The atmosphere is like from a tropical island or something, you will forget you’re actually in New York.
4 – Go To Connolly’s Bar
This is almost a dive bar with darts game, with frozen cocktails, perfect place to feel like you’… in a different country or city.. Great music, you can dance later at night, and the pictures on the walls are so funny, girls surfing or posing at the beach, in the old times…
5 – Which Area is The Best?
When I stayed with Airbnb I stayed around 120th Street area. The more you go up, it becomes more residential… The 98th Street area has the boardwalk and more touristic. So if you’re driving you can definitely try to go to 120’s but then there is no bathroom or restaurant. The closest places are a few blocks away. If you’re going to stay overnight, definitely stay in the residential areas, not touristic areas.
6 – Best Time To Take Photos
Oh, Rockaway is windy and sandy, so better protect your cameras from nature and as well as theft. The best time is when it’s cloudy or the sun is setting. You’ll get amazing shots!!!!
7 – Go With Friends or Alone?
Doesn’t matter. Rockaway beach is so pretty and safe, you’ll enjoy it regardless. If alone, go to close to the boardwalk so you can eat and drink as much as you want. Also, my biggest concern is not being able to get in the water because what if someone steals my bag? Tell a group of people loudly so other groups can hear to take a look at your bag. Don’t bring lots of stuff in case it’s gone 🙂
If you have friends go with them, that would be the best! But if not, don’t let it stop you from going there.. Just bring a good book, water, minimum 30 SPF, hat and enjoy the beach.
And now my memories from Rockaway with amazing friends!
You get to know someone so much by taking them to beach. Do they get in the water, and enjoy the nature? Then they are the keepers! Love my friends so much! Simru spent hours with the boogie board and Taryn supported me while I was trying to jump on the surf board and read her books and did her studies, and Ece although her first time rented the board with me and jumped in the water and tried surfing! 😀
Love you beautiful people!
